Buying a home in
North Carolina
North Carolina has two cities that recruit from Europe: Charlotte, the country's second-largest banking centre, and the Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, built around three universities. Homes cost less than in Boston or New York, there is no state property tax, and every closing is run by an attorney. The hazards are on the coast and in the mountains, not in the two cities.

Banks in Charlotte, laboratories in the Triangle
The state's economic development agency calls Charlotte the second-largest banking centre in the United States, anchored by Bank of America, Truist and Ally, and counts 232,000 people working in financial services across North Carolina. SMBC Group has announced a 2,000-job expansion in the city. A European who comes here usually arrives with a bank, a consultancy or a technology employer.
The second centre is the Research Triangle, the three points of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, with North Carolina State University, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at their corners. The state lists the region as home to more than 675 life-science companies including Biogen, Merck and Pfizer, and Research Triangle Park has more than 385 companies on its site (state economic development agency and Research Triangle Foundation). Researchers, doctors and engineers arrive on academic or employer-sponsored visas.

Before you make an offer in North Carolina
- Decide the length of the due diligence period and the amount of the fee before you write the offer.
- Ask the attorney whom they represent, and whether you want your own.
- Ask the county for the tax value and when the next revaluation takes effect.
